# Export Kindle to Markdown

Alto Index reads the Kindle app on your Mac and writes each book's highlights and notes as Markdown, with its author and progress. The first 20 books are free.

Export your Kindle books with highlights and notes.

## What you get

- A file per book: its highlights as quotes, popular highlights too, then your notes, then a link that opens it in Kindle
- Its author, publisher, language, progress and when you last read it in the front matter
- When Kindle keeps no readable author, Alto Index looks it up online by the book's ASIN and remembers it

## Where the files go

```
alto-index/kindle/The Quiet Orchard - Mara Fenn.md
```

## What you choose

- Tick the books to export; All and Recent help you find them

## Left out

- Dictionaries
- The location of a highlight

## Free and paid

Your first 20 books export and keep syncing free. Then one purchase unlocks Kindle: on its own, as one of any three apps, or with all of them. See [pricing](/pricing).

## With Claude

The [MCP server](/mcp) lets Claude Desktop search your highlights, and `/altoindex:search` in the [Claude plugin](/claude-plugin) searches them with everything else.
