# Export Apple Notes to Markdown

Alto Index exports every Apple Note to a Markdown file with its folders and attachments, and keeps the files in sync. The first 100 notes are free.

Export all your notes with attachments and formatting preserved.

## What you get

- One Markdown file per note, in the same folders as in Apple Notes
- Images, PDFs and drawings copied into an attachments folder beside the note, and embedded where they were
- Checklists as tasks, and your #tags kept in the text
- Link previews as the page's title, linking to it
- Each file starts with its `title`, `created` and `modified` dates, and a `notes://` link that opens the note in Apple Notes; `pinned`, `shared` and `cover` when they apply

## Where the files go

```
alto-index/notes/Travel/San Francisco trip.md
alto-index/notes/Travel/attachments/golden-gate.jpg
```

## What you choose

- Organize by folder, by tag or by smart folder, and tick the ones to export
- Markdown, or HTML pages, one format at a time
- Wikilinks or standard Markdown for images and links, in Options… or Settings › Markdown

## Left out

- Locked notes and Recently Deleted
- A note not yet downloaded from iCloud: open Apple Notes and let it download, then sync

## Free and paid

Your first 100 notes export and keep syncing free. Then one purchase unlocks Apple Notes: on its own, as one of any three apps, or with all of them. See [pricing](/pricing).

## With Claude

`/altoindex:notes` in the [Claude plugin](/claude-plugin) browses and searches your notes, and the [MCP server](/mcp) lets Claude Desktop search them.
