# Export Screenshots to Markdown

Alto Index copies your screenshots from Photos into a folder a day, each with a Markdown note holding the text recognized on your Mac. The first 50 are free.

Your screenshots from Photos, each beside a note holding the text in it.

## What you get

- Each screenshot copied into a folder for its day, with a Markdown note beside it: the picture, its size, and the text in it
- The text is recognized on your Mac, and kept with its positions as JSON too
- An index of every day, newest first
- Originals kept in iCloud are downloaded

## Where the files go

```
## What you choose
- Tick the months to export
- Wikilinks or standard Markdown for the pictures, in Options… or Settings › Markdown
## How it gets access
Screenshots asks for Photos access, not a folder; limited access works too. Deleting a screenshot in Photos, or unticking its month, removes its files.
## Free and paid
Your first 50 screenshots export and keep syncing free. Then one purchase unlocks Screenshots: on its own, as one of any three apps, or with all of them. See [pricing](/pricing).
## With Claude
The [MCP server](/mcp) lets Claude Desktop search the text in your screenshots, and `/altoindex:search` in the [Claude plugin](/claude-plugin) searches it with everything else.
